How to rank in Google AI Overviews
Google says an indexed page with a snippet can appear, no special optimization. On one client site, AI features reached 35% of weekly Google impressions.
Key points
- Google’s rule: a page that’s indexed and eligible for a snippet can appear in AI Overviews. No special optimization, AI text files or markup are needed.
- On Alliance Chemical’s site, AI Overviews and AI Mode made up 27.7% of Google Web impressions from May 18 to September 27, 2026, and 35.0% in the last week.
- Blog guides drew 82.8% of those AI-feature impressions across the 1,000 pages Search Console listed. Product pages drew 10.7%.
- Pages shown more in AI features didn’t lose clicks: click-through rate was 0.47% for the most-exposed quarter and 0.42% for the least.

How do you rank in Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews are AI-written summaries in Google Search that, in Google’s words, “help people get to the gist of a complicated topic or question more quickly.” To rank in them, a page has to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. As of September 2026, Google says that is the whole technical requirement. Which eligible pages get shown comes down to what they say.
The harder question has been whether it’s working, because until June 2026 Search Console gave no separate count. It does now, and we ran the numbers for Alliance Chemical, a chemical distributor whose storefront PHASEKIND built and whose blog PHASEKIND runs. Disclosure: Andre Taki, a PHASEKIND founder, is also Alliance Chemical’s Chief Commercial Officer.
What does Google say you need to appear in AI Overviews?
An indexable page that is allowed a snippet, and nothing extra. Google’s page on AI features says a page “must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, fulfilling the Search technical requirements.”
The same documentation rules out most of what gets sold as AI Overview optimization: “You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features.” Google’s optimization guide, last updated July 10, 2026, adds that “Structured data isn’t required for generative AI search” and “There’s no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces for AI to better understand it.”
What it does ask for is harder to fake: “Create valuable, non-commodity content for your audience,” and “Don’t just recycle what others on the internet have already said, or could easily be produced by a generative AI model.”
How do you see your AI Overview impressions in Search Console?
Open the Generative AI performance report. Google announced it on June 3, 2026, and says “As of August 31, 2026, we’ve rolled out these insights to all websites worldwide.” It counts how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date.
Know its limits before planning around it. It reports impressions only: no clicks and no queries. The same impressions still sit inside the regular Performance report under the Web search type, where “all links in the AI Overview are assigned that same position.” And when we checked on September 29, 2026, the Search Console API offered no way to request this data, so it has to be exported from the interface.
How much search visibility happens in AI Overviews now?
On Alliance Chemical’s site, more than a quarter. From May 18 to September 27, 2026, its pages appeared 8.05 million times in AI Overviews or AI Mode, against 29.07 million Web impressions over the same days: 27.7%. The share rose from 18.3% in the week of May 18 to 35.0% in the week of September 21.
Blog guides carried most of it. Across the 1,000 pages the report listed, guides drew 82.8% of AI-feature impressions and product pages 10.7%. The most-shown page was a guide to removing candle wax, followed by a comparison of 70%, 91% and 99% isopropyl alcohol. None of the 12 most-shown pages averaged a top-three Web position; they averaged between fourth and eighth across all their searches.
That fits Google’s description of how the feature searches: “a ‘query fan-out’ technique — issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources.” A thorough guide can be pulled in for questions it never ranked first for.
Do you need to rank in the top 10 to appear in AI Overviews?
Mostly, but not strictly. Across the 1,000 Alliance pages in the report, pages whose average Google position was in the top 10 drew 91.9% of AI-feature impressions. The 307 pages that averaged 11th to 20th still drew 633,894 of them, 7.3%.
One limit applies. Search Console gives a page’s average position across all of its searches, not its position for the exact question an AI Overview answered. So a page can sit on page two on average and still be a source for a related question, which is what query fan-out would predict. Ranking well helps; it is not the only way in.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
The fear is that AI Overviews turn searches into zero-click searches. On this site, at the page level, we found no sign of it. We took the 253 Alliance pages with at least 20,000 Web impressions and compared the quarter shown most in AI features with the quarter shown least. The most-exposed pages, 37.4% of their impressions in AI features, had a 0.47% click-through rate. The least-exposed, at 14.3%, had 0.42%. The rank correlation between the two measures was 0.09.
This is one site and an observational comparison, not an experiment, so it doesn’t show that AI Overviews never cost clicks. It does show that pages Google cites often can hold their click-through rate, and Figure 1 plots every page so you can check the pattern yourself.
What should you change to show up in AI Overviews?
First, make sure nothing is blocking you. Google lists nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex as the controls that limit how a page appears in these features, so check your templates for them. Then check that the page can be crawled and indexed.
Second, write what only you can write: your own numbers, a method, a result from your business. That is the “non-commodity content” Google asks for, and it is how Alliance’s guides differ from pages that restate each other.
Third, measure it. Export the Generative AI report monthly, join it to your Web performance by page, and watch which pages gain AI impressions after a rewrite. That join is how Figure 1 was built, and it is part of the SEO and GEO work we do for clients.
Watch: the 31-second version
A 31-second motion piece of the note’s data: the weekly share of Google impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode rising from 18.3% to 35.0%, blog guides taking 82.8%, and click-through rate holding. Also on Instagram.
Questions people ask
What are Google AI Overviews?
AI-written summaries in Google Search. Google says they “help people get to the gist of a complicated topic or question more quickly, and provide a jumping off point to explore links to learn more.”
What is the difference between AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Google describes AI Mode as “particularly helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons are needed.” Both use query fan-out. Search Console’s Generative AI report counts impressions from the two together.
Can you stop your pages from appearing in AI Overviews?
Google lists nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex as the controls that limit how a page appears in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Does llms.txt help you appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google says you don’t need machine-readable files, AI text files or new markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Our note on llms.txt covers who actually reads the file.
Does structured data help you get into AI Overviews?
It isn’t required. Google’s July 10, 2026 guide says there’s no special schema.org markup you need for generative AI search. Structured data still matters for rich results.
Does Search Console show clicks from AI Overviews?
Not separately. Google counts a click on a link in an AI Overview as a click in the Web performance report, but the Generative AI report shows impressions only, with no clicks or queries.
